OVIEDO.

OVIEDO



Oviedo is the capital city of Principality of Asturias in the north of Spain and the administrative and commercial centre of the region. People first lived in Oviedo about 1300 years ago. In Asturian language is call Oviéu. The population is about 225,000 now.

The city lends its name to the Sudarium of Oviedo a religious relic of the ninth century. In Oviedo there is a church dedicated to "El Salvador", the Cathedral of San Salvador. There are two theatres: Campoamor Theatre (in it celebrates every year the Prince of Asturias Awards) and Filarmónica Theatre. There are some museums too. Many foreign students from all the parts of the world study at Oviedo University's international campus.

The people of Oviedo are called "ovetenses". In Oviedo there are much famous people like Carmen Polo (she was the wife of Spain's dictator Francisco Franco), Fernando Alonso (he is a Formula1 driver and two-time world champion), Juan Mata (he is a football player in the Manchester United F.C.), Melendi (he is a very popular singer), Leticia (she is the actual princess of Spain)...
